Searching for a dream
Date: 11-12th March, 1992 Venue: Tom Mann Theatre Video Trailer Organized by: Australian Chinese Performing Artists’ Association
Description: This modern drama also participated in “93’ Sydney Multicultural theatre festival”
“Searching for a dream" reflects the living styles of a major overseas Chinese in Australia for the past 100 years. The drama has adopted the form of theatrical performance. Throughout the story of the past, the present and the future of the Chinese migrants’ community, it has illustrated the changes of the traditional Chinese culture in a foreign country from the very first Chinese migrants to the youngest generation after the cohesion of a special state of mind. The drama has shown from the roads to success or failure; to the states of being legal or illegal; from the ups and downs of the families, to the honor or shame of the whole community; which has all drawn up vivid scenes of the overseas Chinese community on Australia. Generations and generations of the Chinese people have gone through drifting and separation and gradually by hard working and determination are now leading forward to their futures, to their ‘dreams’, which has been described by the writers as the images of waves after waves urging forward.
“Searching for a dream” has been a hit and a surprise to all of its Australian audience. Australia's SBS Television, ABC Radio, 2ER radio, multi-cultural radio stations and the major English newspapers have all given special reports about the show. Australians have commented that: for the very time did they see the Chinese people re-presenting their own lives own stage. Apart from the reality and its symbolic significance, it is a strong, romantic, deeply moral Chinese modern drama
"Dream" seems to be a beloved drama of overseas Chinese people. It has received great support from the Australian Multicultural Committee. In 1993, "Searching for a dream" has participated twice in the “93’ Multicultural theatre festival” and was awarded the prize writer by Australian Multicultural Arts Council. Australia has also welcomed Mr. Yujun Wu Rong, the honor Chinese director from China. He is also young Australian Minister for Immigration, and was awarded the "silver medal” for his contribution to the community. The show won the first screenwriter award for a Chinese writer in Australia.
