Involvement in the performing arts, particularly in drama, must be based purely
on enthusiasm and interest. In this spriit and regardless of the outcome, we have
chosen a difficult task.
Involvement in drama absolutely cannot be for the sake of money. You cannot
treat it as a kind of business because a stage performance is a kind of gambling.
Quite often one loses money. In may last year, full of enthusiasm and ideals,
I founded a drama society in the hope of spreading Chinese culture, of strengthening
the understanding and exchanges between it and Australian culture, of enriching
cultural life for Australian Chinese society and of wholeheartedly cultivating
excellence in the culture of the Australian Chinese.
In spring 1989, in preparation for staging <The Legend of Emperor Yue>,
we advertised for recruits to the company. The response from all directions
was fantastic. The applicants included stage performers, dancers,
singers, artists and many other professionals. Everyone has his own talent.
After months of cooperation, what moves me most is the sincerity and love of
our members.
No artistic workers can endure the loneliness of a long period of isolation.
They must find kindred spirits to empathies with in order to maintain creativity
in their artistic lives.
Under financial constraint and in difficult rehearsal conditions, we are not
discouraged nor do we lose heart. We persevere without complaint. However,
if we did not have both personal and financial assistance form people
in the communicates, as well as their Spiritual support and encouragement,
our work could not have developed. We are just like a boat and our friends are
like the wind blowing it, With cooperation we are able to carry many human treasures.
Let us march onhand in hand for the sake of spreading Chinese culture, for the sake of
cultural exchange. Let us find a new dimension to our cultural life.
