2013 Sydney International Campus Arts Festival
Jointly hosted by the ACPAA and China Council for the Promotion of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the 2013 Sydney International Campus Arts Festival was held on the evening of July 28th at Sydney Town Hall and on July 30th at the Sydney Opera House to great success.
Stars of the show included young budding talents from across China, who delighted audiences with performances such as ‘Wind-blown Fragrance of Soma’, showcasing original members of Phoenix and depicting the beautiful story of Soma flowers coming into bloom and filling Liang Mountain in Sichuan Province with their fragrance. In comparison, the dance ‘Red Life’ was warm, cheerful and rhythmic; incorporating jubilant movements in swinging red dresses to express children’s cheer and love for life. Composed in 2004, the dance won first prize at Beijing Arts Festival. Ballet ‘Fan Dance Jasmine’, brought to us by the Juliet Ballet School, embraced a Western classical ballet style of grace and yearning in its interpretation of China’s beautiful Jiangnan river-valley towns. Musically, the prestigious Golden Sail Orchestra filled the venues with lovely melodies.
There was no shortage of talent from the Sydney side either. Misty rain, a soft haze, and maidens pacing home under silk parasols. This was the elegant, fresh, and dream-like realm reflected through Black Swan Dance’s debut piece ‘Rainy Lane’. Folk Dance ‘Xuanwu Sound’ celebrated China’s ethnic diversity with its colourful fabrics, drum beats, and energetic dancing; bringing to audiences the Festival’s blessings. China Youth Arts Troupe’s jazz routine ‘Only’ was just as vibrant and dynamic, incorporating a sexy and modern jazz style. ‘Little Sailors’ was performed by Southern Star Performing Arts, which has just celebrated its 10-year anniversary.
The Festival brought together enthusiastic and talented young artists from many different regions in China and Australia alike, symbolising the ever-strengthening Sino-Australian relationship.
