2014 Sydney International Chinese New Year Gala

On Saturday the 18th of January 2014, the second Sydney International Chinese New Year Gala was met with tremendous success. Held at The Concourse Theatre, the evening was a perfect reflection of its host city’s multicultural canvas, with 300 performers representing 6 countries in an entirely locally funded production. Sydney also remains one of only two cities outside of China given the rights to host a sub-stage of Shandong Television’s famous annual Gala, which is broadcast world-wide via satellite.

The Sydney Gala was divided into three segments: 'Multicultural', 'Devotion', and 'Inheritance'. Beginning with a climactic opening, the pace and of the evening never faltered, with both traditional and modern elements seamlessly infused together. The animated video segments also made for effective storytelling, and audiences were treated to an unforgettable night of dazzling performances.  Many memories and friendships were forged during the hosting and months of planning for the event, and even as the curtains closed, neither the performers nor the audience members were willing to part ways.

Messages of support for the  2014 Sydney International Chinese New Year Gala were delivered by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell, and the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Sydney, Li HuaXin. VIPs in attendance on the night also included Consul and Director of the Cultural Office Consulate-General of china in Sydney Mr.Deyu Zhai, the Representative of the Premier Hon. Mark Coure, the Hon. Sophie Cotsis MLC, and the Deputy Mayor of Willoughby, Gail Giles-Gidney . In his speech, Consul General Li HuaXin wished everyone a prosperous Chinese New Year and a happy Australia Day, and at the same time paid his respects to the livelihoods of the overseas Chinese community.

As Mr. William Yu, Chairman of the ACPAA stated: “Many arts groups have flourished within the Sydney community thanks to Australian laws of multiculturalism and the support of the Consulate General. These groups have not only enriched in beauty, but have also helped shape Australia's vibrant cultural canvas; leading to unique overseas stories and enhanced multicultural understandings."
